Learning English is an exciting experience,
but it can be overwhelming as well. It takes a lot of practice and dedication.
At American English Language School, many students who join our ESL program
have already studied English. However, many students tell us that they do not
get a lot of opportunities to speak. We always encourage our students to use
English outside of the classroom to get as much practice as possible while
studying in America, but a common problem is students don't have someone to
talk to in English.
If you would like to get extra English
practice, here are few options:
Social media:
Social media is a great way to connect with
others. You can chat with friends, old and new. You can try to use some of the
slang words we went over in a previous blog. If you don't have someone with who
you can practice English, join a group! Facebook has countless groups online
where you can find other people learning English and wanting to practice more.
There are also a lot of groups that have grammar lessons, quizzes, and
vocabulary to help you learn English.
If you don't have social media, there are
plenty of apps to help you to improve your English. Here are a few popular
apps:
Duolingo:
Duolingo teaches you vocabulary based on the
topic you choose. You will learn new vocabulary words by connecting them with
the pictures and will have to translate simple sentences into English. This app
is good if you are beginning to learn English since it starts with simple
vocabulary and reviews exercises often. Plus, the setup of the app makes it
feel like a fun game.
Babble:
The app consists of 15-minute lessons and
allows you to choose a topic you are interested in. The app can even listen to
your voice and helps you with pronunciation.
Rosetta Stone:
This app teaches you English in English
instead of explaining words in your native language. It has exercises created
to help you learn basic English, and then it will get more complex as you master
the basics.
Another good resource for learning English is
blogs. There are infinite blogs for students who are traveling abroad. You can
read about other students who are going through the same experiences as you and
might have some useful information to help you. Numerous blogs also cover
difficult material for students, such as grammar or pronunciation.
Lastly, if you are looking to improve your
writing, we recommend Grammarly. You can use Grammarly online or download it on
your phone's keyboard. It instantly corrects your grammar mistakes and will
give you an explanation of your error. You can use to it check your spelling
and learn common grammar mistakes to help you to improve your writing.
