There are plenty of different tests
that you can take to measure your English language skills or to prove your
English proficiency to schools and employers. Last week, we talked about the
TOEFL exam and what you can expect. This week, we will discuss the TOEIC,
another test that measures your proficiency in English. However, while the
TOEFL is more academic-based and more difficult, the TOEIC examines
professional and business-related English.
The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) exam
allows you to test your current English level proficiency. Companies around the
world use the TOEIC as a benchmark for determining job candidates’ ability to
communicate in English, so having a high TOEIC score can help to make you a
strong candidate for job opportunities with global organizations.
The test is split into two parts: the
TOEIC Listening and Reading Test and the TOEIC Speaking and Writing Test. Each
test is scored differently.
The TOEIC Reading and Listening tests
are scored on a 990 point scale. It is a paper-based test you can take to
measure your proficiency in English listening and reading from beginner to
advanced level. This section has 100 questions and takes about 2.5 hours. The
first section is listening. You will have 45 minutes to listen to a variety of
short conversations in English and answer the related questions. The second
section is reading. You will have 75 minutes to read all of the different
materials and then respond to the questions.
The TOEIC Speaking and Writing tests
are scored between 0-200. It is an online test that assesses your proficiency
in English speaking and writing from beginner to advanced level. It will test
your vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, fluency, coherence, and organization
of sentences. This section only has 11
questions and takes about 20 minutes. You will need to respond to real-world
situations in spoken and written language. Each question will give you specific
directions for your response, so be careful and make sure that you speak clearly
and use all of the time that you are given.
Preparing for the TOEIC exam takes
lots of work. You should listen to English often by watching English television
or listening to English podcasts and music. In addition, you should read
English books or articles as well as practice writing every day through a daily
journal or by having a pen pal. Last, you should consistently practice speaking
English with others every chance you get. By practicing all of these
communications skills daily, it will help you gain the confidence and skills
needed to do well on the exam.
If you are preparing for the TOEIC
exam and would like some extra help, American English Language School in Los Angeles offers a great
TOEIC preparation program.
It is an intensive, 20 hours per week course that helps students prepare for
both sections of the TOEIC exam. Students will have ample opportunities to
learn and practice many test-taking strategies to ensure success on the exam.
