Places in Our Community

There are many important places that are a part of any town or city in any state or country. These places include police & fire stations, hospitals, post offices, banks, gas stations and supermarkets to name a few. It is important to recognize their symbols and know these places when visiting a new place. This week our students learned to find these places in the city directory and read their addresses and phone numbers. Police & Fire Stations: Each city has their own police and fire station. It is important to know where they are located or at least have their phone numbers. Police stations can help with theft or lost belongings. Fire workers can help when in a tricky or stuck situation. In case of emergencies always dial 9-1-1. It is important to remain calm and know where your emergency is located. Hospitals: There are 160 hospitals in Los Angeles County, California. Each hospital has their own emergency room for immediate care. However, your care will be immediate ba...

How to Take Your Midterm Exam

Just like any other school, American English Language School conducts midterms halfway through the quarter. We review the material the students have learned from the first four units of the book. The midterm covers vocabulary, grammar, and real world experiences the students will reflect on and write a response. There is a listening section to the midterm and a speaking part conducted by the teacher. It is important the students feel confident and secure about taking and passing their midterms. Below are some helpful tips to prepare you for a midterm.   1.       Speak Up. If there was a portion of the material that you found particularly hard or did not understand too clearly the first time, now is your chance for a refresher. Ask the teacher for better clarification or more examples about this material. Chances are other students may have the same questions as you do. With so much material to cover, it is important to let your teacher know which mate...

Comparatives vs. Superlatives Adjectives

Comparatives vs. Superlatives  Adjectives We use comparatives and superlatives to express how nouns, I.e., people, places, and things, are different from each other. Comparative adjectives are used to describe how only two nouns are different, and superlative adjectives are used to show the difference between one noun and all others of its kind. We form comparatives and superlatives based on the number of syllables in each adjective and whether the word ends in y. There are also “irregular” adjectives that follow their own set of rules. See the chart below to get an idea of the different rules, then read some examples.  Examples One – Syllable Adjective She is slower than him. She is the slowest runner. He is faster than her. He is the fastest runner. One – Syllable ends in –e The bus showed up later today. The 22 bus is the latest bus. The Queen is wiser than the King. The Queen is the wisest . One – Syllable consonant + short v...

Adjectives to describe food

For humans, food lies on an emotional level as well as the instinctual need for survival. We use food as connection, love, memory, identity, understanding, and creation. While there is nothing wrong with eating alone, history has shown us in ALL cultures, meals were meant to be shared. Food brings people together and can even transcend language barriers. Nevertheless, we would like to teach you some ways to connect with the English language through food.  Let us start with taste, it is one of your five senses and is used quite often. Every time you put food, drink, or something in your mouth, you are tasting it. We have words in English to describe these sensations, known as adjectives. Adjectives describe any and every noun and all five of your senses, from taste to smell, sound, sight and touch. Adjectives are important because they help relate an object, person, or place to another person. In this case, it is relating the pleasant taste of food. Have you ever tasted food ...
