However, President’s Day is also a national holiday of the United States that celebrates the birthdays of President George Washington and President Abraham Lincoln. In this article, you can read a little more information on these amazing U.S. Presidents.   George Washington was born in 1732 on his family’s plantation in Virginia. He was raised to be a true Southern gentleman by his family, but also studied military arts and western expansion in school. He used these skills when he was 16 during the French Indian War starting in 1762. In the war, he served as a lieutenant colonel and as an aid to the general. After the war, President Washington went back to his home and managed the lands, but was upset about the constant interference from the British government.   Due to their unfair regulations and taxes against him, he decided tha...

Valentine's Day Idioms

Idioms are phrases that English speakers use in everyday conversation, but don’t always make sense if they are pulled apart, word by word. Here are some common idioms that are associated with things involving Valentine’s Day themes to add to your conversational vocabulary.   1.     Match made in heaven   This idiom is about a romantic couple that is so similar to one another that it seems as though their purpose in life is to be together. We also use this phrase to describe objects or food that go well together.   For example: I’m so glad they are getting married, they are a match made in heaven!   2.     Puppy love   This idiom describes a type of love that seems like the loyalty a dog shows its owner or it can describe a love where the person is immature and the love is not very serious.   For example: Teenagers should not get married because they are usually experiencing puppy love.   ...

Count and Noncount Nouns

Cat, table, grandpa, beach, happiness, and fear. What do all of these words have in common? They’re all nouns. When you begin learning English, nouns are one of the first parts of speech you will learn about. Nouns can be a person (grandpa), place (beach), thing (table), or idea (happiness).   Of course, there are different rules for the different types of nouns, like how to turn a singular noun into a plural noun or which article to use with what type of noun, so it can seem confusing at first. One problem many students have with nouns is understanding the difference between count and noncount nouns.   What are count nouns? Count nouns refer to nouns we can count. They may be singular or plural nouns. The article you use depends on whether the noun is a count or noncount noun, so be careful. You may either use the article “a,” “an,” or “the” before these nouns.   Some examples include:   ●        Henry saw a ca...
