Fall into the 4th Quarter!

We are now in Autumn! Otherwise known as fall. Fall is the season after summer and before winter. It begins in September and ends in November. It is mostly know as fall since this is the time that the leaves will be ‘falling’ from the trees and temperatures begin to decrease. The colors of fall are orange, green, yellow, and brown. During this fall season, our 4th quarter will begin! Our 4th quarter will start next week on Monday, October 3rd. What should students expect during this quarter?   During the first week of our 12 week ESL course, students will go over the syllabus and class expectations. Students may play some games and participate in fun activities to get to know each other and feel more comfortable   After the first week, students will go over a new unit each week. Students will practice their reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills throughout the week. Then on Fridays, students will take a unit test based on what they learned that week....

Books ESL Student Should Read

At American English Language School, we know that learning English happens in and out of the classroom. One way we like to encourage our students to practice their English is by reading books. This will also allow them to learn the social situations of our country as well as some slang or vocabulary practice they might not get to experience in their classroom. Here is a list of three English books for ESL learners to try.   1.     Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom   This beautifully written book is the story of a man watching his professor and mentor waste a way to disease. Through this experience the main character gets to see his professor in a new way and gets to learn the life lessons he needs through his mentor’s experiences.   2.     The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon   Christopher is a 15-year-old boy who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome. When his neighbors’ dog is murdered,...

Prepare for a New Quarter

The last quarter of the new year is about to start at AELS, do you feel prepared? Getting ready for a new quarter can be exciting, but also a little distressing. If you are feeling a little anxious about this new quarter, check out these tips to better prepare yourself for days full of study and less stress.   1.     Read a Book or Watch a Show on Your List in English   Before the chaos of assigned reading material, new vocabulary words, and study dates, pick a book to read or a show you would like to watch. By doing something that you enjoy prior to the craziness of the new quarter, you are more relaxed, happy and ready to start class. You also will have something to talk about with your classmates during break time!   2.     Clean Your Space and Check Your School Supplies   Starting off the new quarter is stressful enough, just imagine if your homelife was just as distressing! Make sure that you choose a clean ...

Why American English Language School in Los Angeles?

Our school, American English Language School, is different from other language schools in Los Angeles. We emphasize smaller classroom sizes, focus on conversations, and follow a quarter system. Doing things differently helps us to provide a uniquely rewarding experience for students. Now, what does that mean?   First of all, our ESL program is separated by levels. We have a basic level for absolute beginners, and levels 1,2,3,4, and 5. Each level of our ESL program lasts for a quarter or 3 months (12 weeks). In between each quarter, students will have a 1 week break from classes. Before students begin our ESL program, we will schedule them for a placement test. After taking their placement test, we will inform them of which level they will be placed into.   Secondly, we focus on conversation. Our small class sizes helps students to feel comfortable and have plenty of time to practice their English speaking. Many students have told us they never use English out...

Study Tips for the Final

This week, our students at American English Language School will be reviewing their previous units in preparation for finals week! They will be doing a variety of activities in order to do their best, but studying at home is a huge part of doing well on that final test. Here are some tips to study for any language exam!   1.     Study A Little Every Day            We know that a lot of students like to “cram,” all their studying at the very last minute, but according to a lot of different studies, this doesn’t always work. Sometimes cramming can lead to exhaustion which can lead students to not be at their best during the test. In order to stay more alert, students should pick at time each day and study a little and not try to put it all in one day.   2.     Use your Vocabulary in Conversations with People Outside Class.           ...
