Why American English Language School in Los Angeles?

There are plenty of reasons to enroll in American English Language School’s ESL program. If you are starting to search for a new language school in Los Angeles, then look no further! Are you not sure how AELS can help you to improve your English? Keep reading to learn more about our ESL program and how it can help you achieve your English goals!   First, we focus on conversations. While our ESL course will cover reading, writing, listening, and grammar, it emphasizes having conversations in the classroom. Many students have a basic level of English when entering our ESL program. However, a frequent occurrence we have observed is students never have opportunities to practice their speaking skills. Their family, friends, coworkers, etc., all speak their native language, so they don’t get any practice outside of the classroom.   Another problem students have is they are too shy to speak to others in English. This is why we keep our class sizes small. People tend ...

Words in Advertisements

Our students previously went over the different places to purchase goods and services, how to interpret advertisements, compare different purchasing methods, and how to be smart consumers. Students looked at different advertisements and discussed the similarities and differences. They also compared advertisements from different businesses offering the same service. Lastly, students even created their own advertisements based on their own company.   We see advertisements everywhere! They are on our televisions, phones, computers, buses, billboards, and we even see them when we are outside taking a walk. However, there may be some words or phrases used in ads that you don’t understand.     1.       Consumer: A person who buys products or services for their own use. 2.       Product Endorsement: When a celebrity or otherwise famous person publicly supports a product. 3.       Jing...

Guest Speakers during Culture Week

Guest speakers during culture week are extremely important for our students to learn more about American culture outside the classroom. Culture week is a fun way our students learn about things that involve areas outside the classroom. We ask guest speakers to come on the third day of culture week. They are a great addition to our culture week because they allow our students to get an idea about life in the United States that is outside our classroom.              During American English Language School’s culture week, we ask guest speakers from a variety of professional positions that work in the United States. We ask them to make a short thirty minute presentation of their life and how they started working in their profession. The students really enjoy these presentations and get to learn how they can also start these professions and what life outside of the...

How to Change Your Status to F-1 Visa

Last week, we talked about what it means to change your status and determine if you are eligible. If you are still trying to change your status, there are a few documents that you will need to prepare and fees you must pay. The first part of the process is to apply and be accepted by a SEVP-approved school. Schools will have different application requirements and fees. Applying to American English Language School will require you to submit an AELS application form along with copies of your passport, bank statement, and high school diploma or equivalent. When you have been accepted into a SEVP-approved school, the school will issue your I-20 form. Your I-20 form should have ‘change of status’ as the issue reason stated on your I-20 form. After you receive your I-20 form, you will need to pay the I-901 SEVIS Fee. You will also need proof of your payment, so print a receipt. In order to pay this fee, you will need to provide the following: ●        N...
